AU steps up Sudan peace engagement with plans to reopen Khartoum Office

Chairperson of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council,Abdel Fattah al-Burhan,met Mohamed Belaiche in Khartoum on Wednesday to discuss the country’s political and security situation,peace efforts,and plans to reopen the African Union Liaison Office in the Sudanese capital.

The meeting follows the Sudanese government’s return to Khartoum earlier this year after regaining control of parts of the capital from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Belaiche said the AU is consulting Sudanese authorities and finalising arrangements to reopen its liaison office,which closed after fighting erupted in April 2023.

Both sides stressed the need to intensify efforts towards a ceasefire,support an inclusive political process and national dialogue,and promote reconciliation,security and stability. The AU also reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s unity and sovereignty while supporting ongoing political,security and humanitarian initiatives.

The AU Commission announced two weeks ago that it would conduct a political and security assessment ahead of reopening the office,following the Sudanese government’s resumption of operations from Khartoum in January 2026 and the return of UN agencies to the city.
