DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis and Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille toured Johannesburg’s failing infrastructure, visiting three sites which laid bare years of neglect.

At the Nancefield sewer pump station in Eldorado, raw sewage spills into the Klipspruit River, which flows into the Klip River and, ultimately, the Vaal River system, from where drinking water is drawn.

At Maxwell Court in Claremont, residents endure broken infrastructure,no water, and collapsing walls. At Helen Joseph women’s hostel in Alexandra, sewage flows from the upper floors into homes, and drainage failures have persisted since 2022.

“What I’ve seen today is absolutely shocking,” said Hill-Lewis. “What we’ve seen here today is caused by years of neglect, failure to prioritise investment in basic infrastructure, failure to spend money properly.”

Hill-Lewis called for proper investment and an end to corruption.

“It can be fixed with the right initial budget, properly. Make sure that money is being spent on the right things. Make sure that it is not going into the pockets of cronies and cadres. When that happens,I assure you, these problems can be fixed.”
