The European Union (EU) has announced new sanctions targeting Sudan’s gold sector,banning the purchase,import and transfer of Sudanese gold,while also prohibiting the export of mercury and cyanide used in gold mining.
The measures are intended to curb financial resources that sustain the conflict and increase pressure on those accused of fuelling the war. The sanctions also prohibit technical assistance,brokering services and financial support related to the restricted goods.
The EU said gold has become a major source of funding for the conflict,which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has since killed tens of thousands of people,displaced millions and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
