Durban landlord opens case after 2 buildings pelted, 25 windows broken during 30 June march

March and March protesters marched through Durban on 30 June.Some threw marbles at high-rise buildings,cracking or breaking at least 25 windows.A motorist also had his car’s rear window smashed during the march.Although March and March’s protest action in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday appeared well-managed and coordinated in its early stages,drama unfolded at the tail end of a march in Durban,when two high-rise buildings were pelted,and a car’s rear window was smashed.

March and March protesters snaked through the roads of Durban on Tuesday,30 June – the organisation’s deadline for undocumented immigrants to leave the country.

They stopped outside the Point police station,where March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma addressed supporters.

Tension grew when marchers became agitated because Ngobese-Zuma addressed them in English.

Some marchers paced up and down,and eventually,one person moved to the front glass door of a high-rise building,where the person and others started drinking,according to a landlord who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He said the marchers then began throwing marbles at the windows.

“Twenty-five windows have been reported as cracked or broken,” he said.

He showed News24 some of the broken windows and marbles inside the rooms.

As he spoke to News24,another tenant called him to report a broken window.

During the interview,police passed by as they carried out post-march inspections.

He reported the issue to the officers and was told to open a case at the police station.

The police were walking from the next-door building,where they also received a complaint about marbles being thrown through windows.

The landlord told News24 that he opened a case on Wednesday.

He did not provide News24 with a case number.

News24 also witnessed that a motorist was furious after his car,which had been parked on the side of the road at the time of the march,was stoned.

Ngobese-Zuma had not responded to the claims by the time of writing.
