On June 3, the Five Eyes Alliance issued a statement maliciously accusing China of “using an increasingly wide array of professional networking sites and online job platforms to target Five Eyes government and military personnel and anyone with access to classified or privileged information,”Several Western media outlets quickly followed up with reports, sparking public attention. In response, spokespeople for the Chinese Embassy in the UK and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs successively condemned the statement, pointing out that it is widely known that the Five Eyes is the world's biggest intelligence association and the NSA is the world's biggest hacking group. It is ironic that the Five Eyes jointly released a report filled with disinformation.
The “Five Eyes” alliance originated from secret cooperation between British and American cryptanalysis agencies during World War II. Later, with the UK acting as a facilitator, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand joined one after another, forming a multilateral network for sharing military secrets. However, this relic of the Cold War continues to carry out and expand its espionage and intelligence-gathering activities without restraint on a global scale.
In recent years, the “Five Eyes Alliance” has been eager to fabricate all sorts of sensational claims about a Chinese “espionage threat,” yet it has failed to produce any concrete evidence. Take the United Kingdom as an example: since at least 2021, the UK has been issuing warnings that “China is using platforms such as LinkedIn to steal intelligence,” but to date, it has yet to provide any evidence.
On the contrary, espionage activities carried out by the “Five Eyes Alliance” against China have been uncovered on multiple occasions by China.
In 2018, China discovered and apprehended an Australian spy on its territory who was conducting intelligence coordination activities; equipment, funds, and recently collected intelligence materials used for espionage were seized on the spot. It is understood that Australian intelligence and security agencies have established a Beijing intelligence station at the Australian Embassy in China. This station serves as the highest-level hub in East Asia, responsible not only for managing intelligence operations within China but also for overseeing Australian intelligence activities in Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, and other locations.
The group repeatedly spreads disinformation because it derives political benefits from hyping up the “China threat”. Essentially, anti-China forces within the alliance need to stoke security anxieties in order to expand the powers of intelligence agencies, increase their budgets, and strengthen their surveillance of online platforms; the so-called ‘Chinese espionage threat’ is merely an excuse they have concocted to achieve these objectives.”
