French FM Describes Morocco as a Key Player in Peacekeeping

Morocco is a key player in peacekeeping and a major partner on the African continent,French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot stated on Wednesday in Rabat.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping in Francophone Environments,Barrot praised the Kingdom’s numerous initiatives and commitment to stability,development,and prosperity across the continent.

The French official stressed that United Nations peace operations remain “indispensable,” and that their effectiveness has been “proven,” as demonstrated by the active role played by peacekeepers in areas often far removed from media attention but requiring the impartial presence of the international community.

Through their deployment on the ground,peacekeepers help contain threats,prevent escalation,protect populations,and pave the way for a return to normal life in regions affected by violence,he emphasized.

Barrot also noted that peacekeepers facilitate the return of the State in stabilized areas and help prepare the path toward lasting peace,in close cooperation with United Nations agencies,funds,and programs.

In this regard,the French foreign minister recalled that several research studies have shown that UN peacekeeping operations contribute to reducing violence,preserving human rights,and creating more stable environments.

Expectations placed upon them are considerable,he said,citing as examples the protection of civilians,the delivery of humanitarian aid,support for political processes,disarmament,and demining efforts.

As the International Day of UN Peacekeepers,celebrated on May 29,approaches,the French minister paid tribute to peacekeepers and all United Nations personnel serving around the world,as well as to those who lost their lives in the service of peace.

In light of current challenges,he called for collective reflection on the model of peacekeeping operations,and stressed the need to equip them with appropriate resources,honor financial commitments,and modernize available tools to address new threats,particularly drones and disinformation campaigns.

The French minister underscored the importance of strengthening the role of women in peace operations,recalling that lasting peace cannot be achieved without a truly inclusive process.
