The Congo Basin Climate Commission (CBCC) has praised Morocco’s King Mohammed VI for his “visionary leadership” in advancing African climate action, highlighting his role in strengthening continental cooperation and mobilizing joint responses to climate change.

Speaking after a ministerial meeting of the CBCC in Nairobi,Congo’s Environment Minister and Executive Secretary of the Commission,Arlette Soudan‑Nonault, said the Moroccan monarch had played a central role in shaping Africa’s climate governance.

She underscored that the current framework for African climate action dates back to the African Action Summit held in Marrakech in 2016 alongside COP22,where King Mohammed VI spearheaded the creation of three regional climate commissions — covering the Congo Basin, the Sahel and African island states.

“This historic summit expressed a vision in which Africa must take charge of its own destiny in the face of climate challenges,” Soudan‑Nonault said.

The CBCC,she noted,is not only a political platform but also includes an operational mechanism aimed at turning climate commitments into concrete development projects.

The next phase will focus on mobilizing funding for projects under the fund, with a donor roundtable scheduled for May 26,preceded by a heads-of-state summit on May 12 in Nairobi, she said.

Morocco took part in the Nairobi meetings through a delegation led by Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali, alongside senior officials from the foreign ministry and environmental agencies.

Morocco has emerged in recent years as a leading advocate for African-led climate cooperation, using diplomacy and technical expertise to build regional frameworks.

The Congo Basin, spanning several Central African countries,is the second-largest tropical rainforest in the world, playing a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide, preserving biodiversity and regulating the global climate.
