South Sudan: Speaker Kumba Defends Role Amid Ruling Party Push for Removal

The Speaker of South sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly,Jemma Nunu Kumba, has reaffirmed her commitment to constitutional duties following a challenge to her leadership by members of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

In a statement issued on April 5,2026,Kumba said she remains focused on implementing the 2018 peace agreement and supporting the country’s transition under President Salva Kiir.

Her response comes after an SPLM parliamentary caucus meeting on March 31,where lawmakers presented a petition seeking her removal, citing poor management and alleged corruption. Kumba’s office, however, argued that the process lacked transparency, noting that only selected MPs were allowed to speak and no formal debate or vote was held.

The Speaker pledged to continue executing her duties “with impartiality and dedication” while urging unity and attention to national priorities, including peace implementation and preparations for upcoming elections.

Meanwhile,an extraordinary sitting of parliament scheduled for April 4 was postponed to allow the ruling party to complete internal consultations on leadership changes. The session has been rescheduled for April 7,with uncertainty remaining over whether Kumba will retain her position.
