Dozens of trains have been cancelled out of Glasgow after a severe fire at a three-storey building near the city’s main station.

Passengers are facing major disruption on services in Scotland after a blaze broke out at the Forsyth Building on Union Street.

Trains have been suspended from the station’s high level platforms,while services continue to pass through the low level part of the hub without stopping.

More than 60 firefighters tackled the inferno which was reported on the ground floor of the building at around 3.45pm this afternoon.

By Sunday evening,pictures showed huge flames billowing out the upper floors.

Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens.No casualties were reported,while a nearby hotel was evacuated as firefighters continued to tackle the blaze.A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘More than 60 firefighters are currently working to tackle a large building fire on Union Street,Glasgow.‘We were alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday,8 March,to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building.‘At its height,15 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicle were mobilised to the area,where firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire.‘There are no reported casualties,and crews remain at the scene.’The blaze broke out at a three-storey building on Union Street (Picture: Garry F McHarg/FOCAL Scotland)National Rail confirmed that Glasgow Central station would remain closed on Monday morning and that services were likely to be disrupted until the end of the day.Avanti West Coast advised passengers not to travel to the station this evening due to the major incident.It said in a statement: ‘We’re strongly advising customers not to travel to or from Glasgow Central today,Sunday 8th March. This is due to an ongoing emergency services incident at Glasgow Central station. ‘Any customers with tickets dated today 8th March from Glasgow Central to London Euston can use their ticket on any Avanti West Coast train via the same route tomorrow,9th March. We recommend that customers planning to travel tomorrow to check before they travel.’The operator added that passengers could use tickets on LNER services between Edinburgh and King’s Cross at no extra cost.Scotrail advised customers to make their own travel plans as it was not guaranteed they would be able to complete their journey.Paul Sweeney,the Labour MSP for Glasgow,said the building had partially collapsed.He wrote on X: ‘I hope the fire can be contained. The corner of the Forsyth Building,as well as the Caledonian Chambers and Central Hotel seem unaffected.‘It’s a massive blow to Union Street with the restoration of the Egyptian Halls in prospect.’Dating to 1851,the Forsyth Building formerly housed the eponymous department store before being repurposed into a mix of office and retail space.The category B listed building was sold in 2023 for nearly £10million,according to Insider.co.uk.The cause of the blaze is as of yet unknown and is under investigation.Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at .
