Morocco continues its military modernization drive with U.S. Defense Department’s approval for a $260 million acquisition of 612 FGM-148F Javelin anti-tank missiles and 200 portable launchers, reinforcing the kingdom’s defense capabilities amid regional security challenges.
The U.S. Department of Defense authorized the transaction on May 31,2025,following preliminary approval from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) in March.
DSCA had then said the sale will help improve “the security of a Major Non-NATO Ally that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in North Africa.”
The deal will also “improve Morocco’s long-term defense capacity to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to meet its national defense requirements,” the U.S agency had underlined.
The deal, published in the Federal Register, underwent Congressional review as required for arms exports to non-NATO partners, with officials emphasizing the sale’s contribution to regional stability.
This latest purchase complements Morocco’s April 2025 acquisition of 600 FIM-92K Stinger Block I surface-to-air missiles worth $825 million, designed to enhance short-range air defense capabilities. Together, these transactions underscore the deepening military partnership between Rabat and Washington.
Morocco’s defense procurement strategy reflects sustained investment in advanced systems over recent years. Major acquisitions include 24 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters,25 F-16 Block 72 fighter jets, and modernization of 23 existing F-16s.
By investing substantially in cutting-edge military technology,Morocco aims to develop a modern, deterrent defense force while building foundations for domestic military industrial capabilities. This approach aligns with long-term strategic autonomy objectives, diversifying expertise sources, and preparing to address current and future security threats.
The Javelin system’s addition provides Moroccan forces with advanced anti-armor capabilities, complementing existing air defense improvements and reflecting comprehensive military modernization efforts. These investments position Morocco among North Africa’s most capable military forces, equipped with sophisticated American weapons systems supporting national defense requirements.
Morocco and the United States share common concerns and consult closely on security, political, and economic issues, and on sustainable development. Morocco is U.S. strong partner in counterterrorism efforts and works closely with U.S. law enforcement to safeguard both countries’ national security interests.
The U.S. and Morocco coordinate their efforts to promote regional stability and security, including through the Global Counterterrorism Forum and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
