Flash floods ravaged the town of Mokwa killing at least 115 people,as rescuers say the real toll is still hidden beneath the mud and debris.

The River Niger, swollen by days of relentless rain, surged through the heart of Niger State on Wednesday night. It tore through Mokwa, leaving behind a trail of ruin and silence, according to international news agencies.

The town’s Quranic school is now a shell. More than 50 students are unaccounted for.

The Nigerian Red Cross says at least 78 people have been injured. Thousands more are displaced, sleeping in schools, mosques, and under trees. Aid is trickling in,but the roads are broken, and the water hasn’t receded.

Last year, floods killed over 1,200 people across Nigeria. Scientists warned it would happen again, citing climate effects and frail infrastructure.
