The European Parliament and Egypt held this week in Cairo the 14th EU-Egypt Interparliamentary Meeting (IPM) that focused on fostering parliamentary dialogue and cooperation.
The EU parliament’s delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries (DMAS),led by Chair Laurent Castillo,and Egyptian MPs discussed a wide array of critical issues,including bilateral relations,regional stability,human rights (with a focus on women’s rights),climate change,and the European Union’s macro-financial assistance to Egypt. Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to a deeper,forward-looking partnership amid the region’s volatile context.
The DMAS delegation also met with members of the executive,including the Minister of Foreign Affairs,and other high-ranking officials. The meetings provided opportunity to delve into pressing matters such as migration,the Middle East conflict,with focus on the war in Gaza,counterterrorism cooperation,and democratic reforms. The EU delegation expressed its concern over the humanitarian impact of the Gaza crisis and acknowledged Egypt’s constructive mediation role in regional affairs.
Emphasis was also placed on supporting Egypt’s socio-economic reforms and enhancing educational and cultural exchange between the EU and Egypt.
Beyond official meetings,the delegation engaged extensively with civil society actors and visited EU-funded initiatives,including a major wastewater infrastructure project and institutions promoting interfaith dialogue.
Roundtable discussions with organizations such as Save the Children and CARE Egypt highlighted the importance of inclusive development,education,and gender equity.
