Uganda has abruptly suspended all military and defense cooperation with Germany, citing alleged “subversive activities” by German Ambassador Matthias Schauer.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) announced the decision on Sunday (25 May),accusing Schauer of engaging with “hostile pseudo-political groups” operating within the country. “This suspension will remain in force until the matter is fully resolved,” said UPDF spokesperson Chris Magezi, referencing what he called credible intelligence. While no concrete evidence has been presented publicly, the accusations mark a sharp escalation in tensions between Kampala and Berlin. Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces,Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba — also President Yoweri Museveni’s son — added fuel to the controversy, stating on X that the issue lies with Schauer personally, calling him “wholly unqualified to be in Uganda,” while expressing admiration for the German people.
Germany,a longstanding development and defense partner to Uganda, has not yet issued a formal response. Bilateral relations could face wider strain, with potential implications for aid, trade, and diplomatic engagement. In 2023,trade between the two nations exceeded $335 million. This fallout reflects a broader regional trend of African nations reasserting sovereignty amid growing concerns over foreign interference, particularly as Uganda prepares for its contentious 2026 presidential elections.
