Concern has grown in both the United Kingdom and Egypt after it was disclosed that Alaa Abdel Fattah,a British-Egyptian activist, has suffered severe health complications while being held in an Egyptian prison.
Having engaged in a hunger strike exceeding fifty days,Abdel Fattah is suffering repeated vomiting and signs of internal inflammation, his family reported. Medical assistance has been administered within the prison, though it is believed his stomach and intestines may have sustained damage due to prolonged fasting and minimal nutrition intake.
The hunger strike was initiated following news that Abdel Fattah’s mother,Laila Soueif, had been hospitalized in London after months without solid food. Her hunger strike, started in September 2024 as part of her campaign to secure her son’s release, resulted in dangerously low blood sugar levels. She has since been kept stable on a glucose drip. Despite his own declining health,Abdel Fattah has continued his protest by consuming only herbal tea, black coffee, and rehydration salts.
International attention has been reignited as calls for diplomatic intervention have intensified. A statement issued by Abdel Fattah’s sister described the emotional and physical toll endured by the family. The British government has been urged by campaigners to increase pressure on Egyptian authorities, particularly after Abdel Fattah’s early release was denied and his detention extended until 2027. Several human rights organizations have reiterated demands for his immediate release, citing prolonged imprisonment and deteriorating health as grave concerns.
