Morocco prepares to launch the 5G internet network in the six cities that will host the 2030 World Cup,head of the country’s telecoms regulator Hicham Lahjomri said.

By 2026,25% of Moroccans will be connected through 5G,and 70% by 2030,he was quoted by Medias24 as saying.

After the six cities,Morocco will expand the service to 20 cities and the highway network and 40 cities by 2028,he said.

Morocco is preparing to launch a tender to launch 5G bandwidth,a project that attracts interests from China’s Huwawei and western firms,Morocco’s Finance News Hebdo said in March.

Huwawei is already operating in the country in partnerships with local operators Maroc Telecom and Orange Maroc and seems to be better placed compared to western peers such as Nokia,Ericson, and Oracle.

Compared to 4G,5G can provide download speeds up to 100 times faster, while reducing latency to as low as 1 millisecond.

Morocco has one of the highest internet penetration rates in Africa at 90.7%.
