The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported on May 20 that they have been engaged in combat with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Omdurman city, north of Khartoum, since Monday,May 19. The SAF is getting close to clearing Khartoum State of RSF fighters, according to a statement from SAF spokesperson Nabil Abdalla.

“Our forces continue to crush the remaining militia elements in western and southern Omdurman, while advancing to clear the Al-Salha area and its surroundings,” Abdalla said. Using footage shared on social media, the SAF was seen moving forward in western Omdurman’s Al-Salha and inside the RSF headquarters, which is said to be the RSF’s last military base in Khartoum State.

The SAF “recaptured the areas of Wad Bakrawi,Al-Qiaa,and the main market in Al-Salha” on Tuesday morning,a local eyewitness told Xinhua. As the SAF advances in southern Omdurman,it has “taken control of the Al-Muthallath area, west of the Jabal Awliya Dam,” a military source told Xinhua, requesting anonymity.

Since April 2023,the SAF and the RSF have been engaged in a bloody battle in Sudan. Tens of thousands have been killed in the conflict, and millions have been displaced both inside and outside of Sudan.
