Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has expressed thanks to Morocco for its support in helping restore electricity to parts of Spain following a massive power outage.
Power was restored in some northern and southern regions “thanks to interconnections with France and Morocco,” Sanchez said in a televised address, adding: “We are grateful to both countries for their solidarity at this time.”
Sanchez said Spain has “no conclusive information” yet on the cause of the blackout, which disrupted the lives of millions across Spain,Portugal and France.
“We still do not have conclusive information about the reasons for this outage… It’s better not to speculate,we will know the causes,we do not rule out any hypothesis,” Sanchez said in his address.
Sánchez pointed out that the outage stemmed from an incident within the “European electricity system” and noted that southern regions of France had also been affected.
The Prime Minister has convened a crisis meeting to address the situation. Spain’s electricity grid operator estimated it would take between six and ten hours to fully restore power after the blackout, which began Monday at around 10:30 GMT.
The outage affected international connections used by several telecommunications operators, particularly through servers based in Spain, the Moroccan National Airports Office (ONDA) said in a press release.
The power outage disrupted Check-in and boarding pass issuance systems in Moroccan airports.
Airport teams are currently in close contact with support staff of the affected operators to restore the situation as quickly as possible,ONDA said.
In the meantime,Moroccan airports have switched to manual check-in and boarding procedures.
