Calls mount in UK to designate Polisario as terrorist group

North Africa PostApril 22,2025 12:30 pm

Former UK defense and trade minister and once member of Parliament Liam Fox added his voice to US congressmen, pundits, regional experts and western think tanks who have recently made the case for designating the Polisario as a terrorist group in view of the militia’s involvement in targeting civilians, violating UN ceasefire and acting in connivance with Iran and its regional proxies to destabilize the region.

“Like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Polisario Front is an Iranian proxy organisation. For the sake of our Moroccan allies,Western governments must move quickly to designate this group a terrorist organization,” Fox said on X.

He highlighted the recent detailed report by US think tanks FDD and the Hudson Institute which warned of the risk posed by the Polisario to regional peace and security as well as to western interests,as the Algeria-backed separatist group strengthens its alliance with Iran.

The same call was echoed by Senator G Craughwell,Independent Senator and member of the Labour Vocational Panel of Seanad Éireann.

“Morocco is a beautiful, peaceful country. No way can the Polisario Front be allowed to destroy Morocco as Hamas & Hezbollah destroyed the Gaza strip. We stand with Morocco,” he said on X.

As the US reaffirms recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and pushes for resolving the conflict on the sole basis of Morocco’s autonomy plan,Congressman Joe Wilson said he is preparing to introduce a legislation that will designate the Polisario militias as a terrorist group.
