An increasingly broad international consensus is emerging across the globe for including the Algeria-backed polisario militias in the U.S. terror black list.
Several influential politicians,Associate professors and analysts from Europe,Latin American, the United States…have backed the findings of the recent report published by U.S. Hudson Institute urging the Trump administration to designate the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) like the Houthis,Hamas, and other Iranian proxies posing a direct threat to American security interests.
In this connection,Paraguayan Senator Eduardo Nakayama called for listing Polisario as terrorist organization for its ties with Iran and its role in regional instability, including radicalization and trafficking in Tindouf camps.
Ex-foreign minister of Panama FJ Alvarez De Soto shared the same views and positions on the use of Polisario by Iran to expand its influence in Africa.
In France, member of the Republicans party,Pierre-Henri Dumont (ex-MP) called on Paris to label Polisario as a terrorist organization, saying the armed militias are used as a proxy by Algeria and Iran. They have set an alliance with Hezbollah, threatening peace and security in the region,he argued.
These calls echo British former defense minister Sir Liam Fox,Republican congressman Joe Wilson, and Irish senator Gerard Craughwell.
They all pointed out that the Polisario, like Hamas and Hezbollah,is an Iranian proxy organization. For the sake of our Moroccan allies,Western governments must move quickly to designate this group a terrorist organization, they argued, stressing the importance of the recently-published detailed reports by US think tanks The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and The Hudson Institute, which explained the legal grounds for branding the Polisario separatist group a terrorist organization
Former UK defense and trade minister and once member of Parliament Liam Fox made the case for designating the Polisario as a terrorist group in view of the militia’s involvement in targeting civilians, violating UN ceasefire, and acting in connivance with Iran and its regional proxies to destabilize the region.
“Like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Polisario Front is an Iranian proxy organization. For the sake of our Moroccan allies,” Fox said on X.
For his part,Irish senator Gerard Craughwell said : “We stand with Morocco. No way can the Polisario Front be allowed to destroy Morocco as Hamas & Hezbollah destroyed the Gaza strip”.
In Washington, republican congressman Joe Wilson stressed the importance of the Hudson Institute study explaining the legal grounds for branding the Polisario separatist group a terrorist organization
“The Polisario must be designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Trump will fix it”,said Joe Wilson in his X account. The Hudson Institute report supports the Congressman’s position and efforts engaged to introduce a legislation designating the Polisario militias as a terrorist group.
Several other experts have said that time has come for the U.S. to designate the Polisario Front as a FTO,noting that Algeria’s support for the separatist group is a deliberate strategy to undermine regional stability, challenge Western influence, and destabilize Morocco, one of the United States’ and Europe’s most trusted partners in Africa.
The advocates for the American designation of Polisario as an FTO are building a strong legal case against the separatists. The charges include attacks on civilians, kidnappings, use of child soldiers, participation in foreign conflict (Syria) and alliances with jihadist and Iranian-backed networks.
The latest Polisario attacks on MINURSO patrol units in the buffer zone show their feckless behavior and confirm their destabilizing agenda set by Algerian junta.
