Russia snubs Algeria on Victory Day

Russia has snubbed the Algerian military regime on Victory Day,attended by leaders Algeria considers as enemies.

Putin was seen giving a presidential state welcome to Burkina Faso’s military ruler and Libyan general Khalifa Haftar, two leaders Algeria is at loggerheads with.

Russia invited presidents of allied countries to the event marking the Russian victory over Nazi Germany. These included the heads of state of China,Egypt,Brazil,Ethiopia,Kazakhstan,Vietnam,DRC,Armenia,Cuba, and Venezuela.

Algeria deepened its regional isolation when it downed a Malian drone that was tracking terrorist groups in northern Mali. The incident led the alliance of Sahel states (Mali,Burkina Faso, and Niger) to recall their ambassadors and accused Algiers of backing terrorism in the region.

The three countries have become close allies of Moscow as they sacked western troops.

Algeria has on multiple occasions showed animosity towards the Russia-backed Wagner militias operating in the Sahel.

Algeria’s hostility towards the growing influence of Russia in the Sahel, has reduced it to a mere client of Russian armament instead of an ally.

Marked by impulsive reactions and inconsistency,Algeria’s diplomacy has lost both west and east. Its president vowed to join the BRICS and abandon the dollar. But,after it failed to join the group of fast growing economies,Algeria ordered its ambassador to speak to a minor US publication offering Trump access to its resources in exchange for arms.

But no one takes the Algerian president seriously. Under president Tebboune,Algeria’s voice has become inaudible, while its stances lack credibility.
