The Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors has announced plans for stage a nationwide strike and protest march on May 2,in response to the breakdown of negotiations with the Ministry of Health.
Talks held on Monday,April 28,reportedly failed to yield any meaningful outcomes, despite ministry officials acknowledging the legitimacy of the doctors’ grievances. The organization, representing junior medical staff across Tunisia, expressed deep frustration at what they described as another fruitless dialogue with authorities.
According to the group’s official statement, the Ministry of Health appeared to offer verbal support but stopped short of presenting actionable solutions. While ministry representatives did not dispute the validity of the doctors’ concerns, the organization claims there was a complete absence of concrete commitments. They argue that the refusal to advance meaningful decisions signals a broader lack of political will and reinforces a pattern of evasion that has long plagued the ministry’s dealings with health professionals.
The group further condemned the government’s repeated invocation of “procedural obstacles” as an excuse for inaction. They assert that such bureaucratic delays not only compromise the welfare of young doctors working under increasingly dire conditions, but also threaten patient safety. The organization reaffirmed its full support for the demands of young medical professionals and vowed to pursue every possible avenue of protest until their calls for fair treatment and improved working conditions are met.
