Morocco launches industrial energy audit program to advance efficiency goals

North Africa PostApril 29,2025 2:36 pm

The Moroccan Energy Investment Company (SIE) has launched a new initiative to select industrial companies for energy audits, advancing the country’s industrial energy transition and efficiency targets.

The program aims to help manufacturing companies identify energy-saving opportunities while promoting both efficiency measures and renewable energy solutions. All audits will adhere to Moroccan standards NM ISO 50002 and NM EN 16247-3,implementing a comprehensive approach that includes existing data analysis, measurement campaigns, and technical and economic recommendations.

To qualify, companies must have an annual energy bill exceeding MAD 1.2 million ($12,000) and commit to co-financing the audit. For audits costing up to MAD 100,000 ($10,000),companies must cover 50% of costs, while for more expensive evaluations, they must contribute a fixed MAD 50,000 ($5,000).

Additionally, participating businesses must provide technical staff to support the audit process and commit to implementing the resulting recommendations. Companies can implement changes either through their own resources or by entering an energy performance contract with an energy service company (ESCO).

This initiative supports Morocco’s broader national energy strategy, which aims to achieve energy savings of 20% by 2030. Energy efficiency represents the “second pillar” of the country’s energy policy and offers significant potential for job creation, with an estimated 100,000 new positions expected in the energy sector by 2030.

The North African kingdom is simultaneously pursuing ambitious renewable energy goals, making substantial investments in solar, wind, hydrogen, and other renewable technologies. These efforts align with Morocco’s target of generating 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The SIE program demonstrates Morocco’s continued commitment to transforming its industrial sector toward greater energy efficiency and sustainability, helping businesses reduce operational costs while contributing to national climate objectives.
