AU PSC: Common African position on UN peacebuilding architecture adopted unanimously

North Africa PostApril 5,2025 1:31 pm

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) unanimously adopted, under Morocco’s chairmanship in March, the Common African Position (CAP) on the United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture, marking a significant step in shaping the global discourse on peacebuilding ahead of this year’s review of the Architecture in New York.

This CAP,based on African consensus and developed through extensive consultations, reflects the unified voice of the African continent and addresses the critical need to strengthen the United Nations’ approach to peacebuilding and peacekeeping.

The United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture, mandated by the UN General Assembly every four years, provides a crucial opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the existing peacebuilding architecture, identify gaps and opportunities, and make recommendations for its improvement.

The CAP focuses on strengthening the key components of the United Nations peacebuilding architecture, namely the Peacebuilding Commission, the Peacebuilding Fund, and the Peacebuilding Support Office. It particularly emphasizes the Triple Nexus—linking peace, security, and development—an ongoing strategic vision consistently advocated by Morocco to sustain peace and security in Africa.

During the debate,Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the AU and UNECA,underscored the strategic importance of prioritizing key thematic areas for Africa, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and capacity building.

For his part, the Commissioner for Political Affairs,Peace, and Security of the African Union (AU),Bankole Adeoye, expressed his deep gratitude to Morocco for its exemplary leadership in this crucial thematic area, stressing that the adoption of this Common African Position illustrates the continent’s strong political will to speak with one voice on issues of peace and security.
