At least 31 civilians, including children, have reportedly been executed by members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Al-Salha neighbourhood of Omdurman,Sudan, according to local medias.
The victims were said to have been accused of collaborating with the Sudanese army,as the RSF continues its ongoing conflict with government forces. The incident has been described by the Sudan Doctors Network as the largest documented mass killing in the area since the outbreak of hostilities.
The killings, labelled as war crimes and crimes against humanity by the Sudan Doctors Network, have prompted urgent calls for international intervention. Appeals have been made for the immediate establishment of safe corridors to allow civilians in the area to evacuate. Footage allegedly showing RSF fighters carrying out executions in Al-Salha was circulated widely on social media, further fueling alarm among human rights organizations and observers. No official response has yet been issued by the RSF in relation to the allegations.
Since the conflict erupted on 15 April 2023,Sudan has been plunged into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 20,000 people confirmed dead and more than 15 million displaced, according to the United Nations and local authorities. However, independent research conducted by American academics has suggested that the actual death toll could be as high as 130,000. Despite the escalating violence, diplomatic efforts to bring about a ceasefire have thus far been unsuccessful, and the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate.
