Egypt rebuts fuel contamination claims amid motorists’ rising concerns

In the face of mounting public disquiet and a swirl of viral online allegations,Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum has firmly dismissed claims that tainted petrol is wreaking havoc on car engines across the country.

Responding to a wave of social media posts depicting corroded fuel tanks and vehicle breakdowns—particularly those attributed to 92 and 95-octane grades—the ministry issued a detailed statement on Monday May 5 asserting that all fuel distributed at local stations adheres strictly to national quality benchmarks.

According to the ministry, routine sampling and analysis conducted in April, both by in-house teams and independent international laboratories, revealed no discrepancies in fuel composition. Prominent suppliers, including Misr Petroleum and the Cooperation Petroleum Company (CPC),were also consulted and denied receiving any formal grievances linked to fuel integrity. Despite these assurances, the ministry has taken pre-emptive steps to dispatch additional inspection teams across the country to bolster public confidence and reinforce regulatory oversight.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has initiated a parallel investigation aimed at rooting out potential instances of fuel tampering. Minister Sherif Farouk has announced a sweeping enforcement campaign, vowing to hold accountable any entities found compromising the nation’s subsidized fuel reserves. As Egypt grapples with inflationary pressures and an evolving energy policy landscape, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between state assurances and public trust—one that calls for transparent governance and vigilant consumer protection in equal measure.
